This new DAC from Aeolus Audio™ delivers a punch or a caress with equal aplomb. Versatile as well as affordable, the Aeolus magiDAC™ epitomizes the Audiomagus philosophy of outstanding performance, build and finish at a reasonable price.

magiDAC by the Numbers
  • The MagiDac™ will accept USB, S/PDIF, and AES/EBU inputs
  • 16 or 24 bit word lengths are valid at all sample rates
  • 32Khz, 44.1Khz, 64Khz, 48Khz, 88.2Khz , 96Khz and 195Khz sample rates are valid. (USB limited to 48Khz/16-bit)
  • You can connect the MagiDac™ to just about any digital source and get a great analog output
  • Ideal for PC and or standard Hi-Fi components
  • Windows, Linux and MAC OS simply see the DC as a standard USB audio device
  • CD/DVD playes, cable and satellite boxes, media players, etc., will feed the S/PDIF input
  • Pro level gear can be connected to the AES balanced input
While most DACs feed the signal through an output stage consisting of an op amp (often with dubious power supplies and coupling caps), the magiDAC™ does not. In fact there are no active devices at all in the final output stage. No transistors, no op-amps, not even any tubes to get in the way of the musical signal. We use a custom built transformer instead. And it works very well indeed.

Working with the manufacturer of the very popular DAC707, Michael Mardis cre
ated a new PCB design. The magiDAC™ 1.0 is built around the CS4398 A/D converter, the flagship chip from Cirrus Logic. It has inputs for 3 types of digital audio streams, S/PDIF, USB and XLR) allowing you to connect it to many different types of sources, from CD players to a computer to pro audio gear.

Not only will the magiDAC™ accept 3 different types of digital signals, it will also decode high bit rates and bit depths. You can feed it up to 96K/24bit stereo (if you have a source for it). So you can use this DAC as an
excellent sound source from your PC or CD player.

The magiDAC™ uses
the Crème de la Crème of custom transformers. These nickel core beauties are designed and hand-built by Bud Purvine, owner of high-end transformer maker Onetics.

The magiDAC™, along with all of the new Aeolus magi™ line, comes in a brushed aluminum enclosure. Solid front and back panels are 6mm thick. All graphics are laser etched for a subtle, but highly durable, application. All hardware is selected for quality and durability, including Vampire RCA jacks, Switchcraft DC jack, and L-com USB and RJ45 Balanced Output jacks.

Available in black or silver enclosure.

Power supply included. Matching Battery Power Supply coming soon!

I'm absolutely impressed with the MagiDac. August 11, 2008
Reviewer: Peter Louisson from Auckland, Pacific New Zealand
Straight from the box, and on a night when we had friends around, the very first tune played through the MagiDAC-enhanced SB3 at low volume revealed a significant easily audible improvement.

It has taken my very ordinary sounding SB3 to a level that pretty much rivals my Ah Tjoeb CD player, and I did not think it would ever do that. I'm hearing things with this that surprise me and particularly like the way it stages, images and rocks. Its not harsh either, quite analogue-like.

What impresses also is its tonal accuracy. Acoustic guitar sounds good enough to eat, if you get my drift. The presentation is the opposite of edgy too, which suits me fine as my Ah Tjoeb CDP is similar. Non-fatiguing.

For the price, the MagiDAC is completely a no brainer.
