The Audiomagus version C Zhalou 2.5 ships with upgraded D/A Chip and Op Amps.

The AD1852  is replaced with the higher quality CS4398 D/A chip. The OPA2604 at the high speed power supply has been replaced with the AD-08 for overall improvement in sound quality, and the 2 OPA2604 at the sound stage have been replaced with LT-1057 for improved accuracy, higher extension and better bass. (Original OPA2604 chips included in box)

Zhaolu (pronounced "chow-loo") DACs have developed a dedicated following around the world for audiophile performance at a very reasonable price. In keeping with this reputation, the Zhaolu DAC 2.5 delivers new levels of engineering refinement and sonic improvement. 

On the heels of the highly successful D2 model, the 2.5 boasts a number of major design upgrades, including independent operational modules for power, digital processing and analog processing, and a headphone amp section. For lower distortion and noise, each module is a separate circuit board connected with quality cables, plugs and sockets.

At Audiomagus, we always say, "stay grounded in the sound!" Listening to the D2.5 is a pleasure: it delivers excellent imaging with a spacious and open soundstage. The CS4398 brings a natural tonality and great detail.

If you are a headphone lover, the D2.5 also features an excellent headphone amp module with separate phone input and a volume -controlled output (which can double as a preamp).

Terrific upgrade January 13, 2009

I originally got this for headphone (Sennheiser HD600) listening since my amplifier (Music Hall Mambo) doesn't have a headphone jack. The headphone experience is great, with great clarity and soundstage. But what really blew me away was when I fed the output of the D2.5C to the AUX analog input of my amplifier. I've always been quite happy with the Mambo's sound, but this was like night and day. It became immediately obvious that the Mambo's builtin DAC/preamp was attenuating the very low and high end. I never thought a DAC could make such a difference in sound, but I'm a convert. This product is a great value even at twice the price.

This is the new sweet spot for DACs July 3, 2008

I searched for a DAC for years before I settled on the Zhaolu D2.5C,  and it has transformed my digital rig. I prefer listening to vinyl, so  I didn't want to spend 600 to 1500 dollars for a DAC, which seems to be the sweet spot for outboard DACs. The Zhaolu met all of my  criteria: reasonably priced, upgradeable, and sold by folks who  
genuinely want me to enjoy what I buy from them.

My Zhaolu now has about 400 hours on it, and I'm hearing more air and a far wider and deeper soundstage than I ever have from digital music.  

It's much easier to hear different instruments in different locations,  and hearing layers in music, such as choral voices, background vocals,  double-tracked guitars, is now much easier. Listening to CDs is now  a more engaging and satisfying experience. The Zhaolu D2.5C has  improved the audio from my video DVDs and cable box quite a bit, too.
